David Mearns


David Mearns is a chartered marine scientist, historical researcher, author, and expedition leader of deep ocean projects.  He is one of the world’s most experienced and successful deep-sea shipwreck hunters with an overall 89% success rate. 

His notable discoveries include MV Lucona, MV Derbyshire, HMS Hood, the Portuguese East Indiaman Esmeralda, HMAS Sydney, HSK Kormoran, AHS Centaur and Rio Grande, the deepest shipwreck ever found (5,862 msw). 

David’s entire 30-year career has been spent in the development and use of ROV and advanced sonar technologies for the location, investigation, survey and recovery of shipwrecks and objects lost at sea.  In 2010 David was awarded an honorary Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to Australia by locating and filming the wrecks of HMAS Sydney II and AHS Centaur.

David’s highly acclaimed book THE SHIPWRECK HUNTER winner of the Mountbatten Award for Best Book, was published by Allen & Unwin in 2017 and by Pegasus Book in the USA and Canada in 2018.
