Charlotte Betts is a hugely talented multi-award winning author of romantic historical fiction. She first realised her enthusiasm for writing after a working life in fashion, interior design and property management. Charlotte’s novels are placed during various eras between the Restoration and WWI and she draws inspiration from the stories of strong women at turning points in history. Her passion for literature and history has seen her publish ten novels with Piatkus.
Her debut novel THE APOTHECARY’S DAUGHTER (2011) (‘Romantic, engaging and hugely satisfying’ Katie Fforde) together with THE PAINTER’S APPRENTICE (2012) and THE SPICE MERCHANT’S WIFE (2013) are stories set around the Great Fire of London.

The Spindrift Trilogy is located in Cornwall around the turn of the twentieth century and each standalone novel is an uplifting tale of love, friendship and the power of art. THE LIGHT WITHIN US (2020) tells the story of Edith and her friends as they seek their independence and establish an artists’ community. THE FADING OF THE LIGHT (2021) continues the story when Edith’s estranged husband, Benedict, reappears after an eight year absence and threatens to destroy the community that they have so carefully built. LETTING IN THE LIGHT (2022) set in Cornwall during WWI brings the heartrending trilogy to a beautiful and satisfying conclusion.
THE LOST DAUGHTER OF VENICE was the first in a new trilogy of novels set in Italy in 1919 and was published by Piatkus in 2023. It was followed by THE ITALIAN GARDEN (2024) and Charlotte’ latest novel THE STARS OVER ROME was published in Autumn 2025.
